Policeman shot dead, another injured in Bungoma

15 August 2013, 11:33 Arap Yego

Armed thugs shot dead one policeman at Kamukuywa market in Bungoma County and seriously injured his colleague on Wednesday morning.

The two policemen were shot by the unknown gunmen at dawn when they responded to a distress call by some business people that the thugs were terrorising at the market.

The heavily armed gang of over 10 thugs robbed more than five businessmen after they broke into their shops and a petrol station at the market, making away with an unspecified amount of money.

According to an eyewitnesses, gunshots rang through the air in the market from some few minutes past midnight on Tuesday up to 4am Wednesday morning as security agents exchanged fire with the robbers.

Kimilili OCPD Philip Wambugu confirmed the incident and said investigations have been launched to apprehend the suspects.

“One of our officers was shot dead. The other one who was injured is recuperating at Webuye District Hospital,” said the OCPD, who appealed to members of the public for information that might lead to the arrest of the thugs.
