Police warn student to avoid Friday demo

Nairobi - Police have warned University Students to avoid a planned demonstration set for Friday over the late provision of Higher Education Loans Board HELB loans.
The Students from the University of Nairobi had warned motorists to avoid certain city roads Friday as they would be there to demonstrate over the late arrival of the loans.
Central Police Station OCPD Paul Wanjama though, says that the demo is illegal and that Police presence will be tight in the Central Business District.
" We will heighten security. We will not allow students to cause disturbance and cause harm to innocent Kenyans," he said Thursday.
The statement by the Police comes just a few hours after Higher Education Loans Board CEO Charles Ringera said that the money would be available to the students by Thursday evening or Friday morning.
Ringera has blamed universities for not communicating their opening dates in time, thus delaying loan disbursement process.
Ringera blamed the delay on universities administrations' slow pace at submitting list of beneficiaries. He insisted that universities failed to send the list of beneficiaries in time thus delaying payment.
" We will have the money ready by Friday or late Thursday. The money has been delayed thanks to universities not forwarding their list of beneficiaries on time.
The students intended to protest along Uhuru highway, Mombasa road, Ngong road, Kiriamiti road, State House road in Nairobi, the Nairobi-Naivasha highway, Siaya-Ugenya road in western and Lunga Lunga road in Mombasa among others.
