Community policing officers from Bungoma have been called upon to intensify public sensitization to enhance security and avert crimes.
Speaking during Bungoma County Peace and Security Forum, D.O 1 Bungoma South Mr. Silvester Mwangulu called on the officers to step up in carrying out their duties in order to enhance public peace and also liaise with other leaders and the provincial administration to fight crime.
Mr. Mwangulu further called on the officers to sensitize people on reporting suspected criminals and crimes rather than taking the law by their own hands, citing the recent event where a person was lynched by a mob in Bungoma town.
He said they should engage the youths in different activities and leadership in order to reduce crimes since most activities are said to be done by youths.
He however congratulated the officers of their efforts to avert crime as he cited Bungoma as more organized in community policing as compared to other areas, also adding that an effort by community policing officer creates peace and saves a life.
On the hand the regional A.P Commandant Bungoma SSP. Peter Malakwen urged the officers to emulate Tanzania’s “nyumba kumi” to enhance peaceful co-existence in the region.
The event was organized by Catholic Justice and Peace Commission and Safer World.
