A drug trafficker fled an accident scene near Awasi district headquarters, Nyando on Thursday afternoon soon after he knocked down a motorcyclist.
Awasi police rushed to the scene of accident only to find the vehicle, Toyota KBD 447T, stuffed with 3 sacks of bhang but the suspect and motorcyclist escaped to avoid arrest.
Nyando OCPD Elias Gitonga said the bhang is suspected to have originated from Migori or Busia.
Gitonga said they are yet to establish the black market value of the bhang.
He divulged that the injured motorcyclist was later intercepted and rushed to a private hospital in Awasi for treatment.
Kericho – Awasi - Kisumu highway is prone to drug trafficking and carjacking incidents.
Residents claim that one can buy anything, ranging from guns, fuel, cement or assorted items at the stretch between Kericho and Muhoroni, and Kericho - Awasi junctions.
Awasi police have had to move swiftly on various occasions to save carjacked passengers and truck drivers along the highway which has since been dubbed ‘a dangerous zone’ by local residents.
However, Nyando District Commissioner Isaiah Tonui said they have put the area under constant surveillance to curb cases of carjacking and all other forms of insecurity.
Tonui said thugs usually take advantage of the area’s sparse population to terrorize commuters and truck drivers.
