Police in Nyeri have recovered a gun and 117 rounds of ammunition at a bush near former President Kibaki’s new residential home at Mweiga.
Area police Chief Kirunya Limbitu said the AK47 rifle had been modified to fire different kinds of ammunition and he suspected it could have been used in a series of robbery incidents along the Nyeri - Mweiga road.
The rifle which Kirunya described as ‘modified Barreta’ was found at a thicket by a class eight boy who was herding his father’s goats along the road.
The boy informed his colleague and later agreed to report to a nearby Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers’ camp who rushed to the scene.
Kirunya said the firearm was wrapped in a polythene bag while the assorted ammunition were wrapped in a pair of KWS uniform trousers.
However, the police boss added that the firearm could also have been used by poachers who have been killing rhinos in Solio Ranch farm.
He noted that a rhino was killed on Saturday night at the conservancy, suspecting that the poachers could have used the same rifle.
