Police probe ‘bizarre’ lorry fire

29 January 2013, 13:59 Oduor Omondi

Police in Kisumu are investigating an incident in which a lorry caught fire at Alendu along Kisumu - Kericho highway while ferrying goods to Taita Taveta from Busia.

The incident was reported by Mathew Hipolit Liamuya who said he was driving to Taita in a KBD 484 Mitsubishi lorry transporting 205 sacks of maize when the lorry mysteriously caught fire.

“The rear tyre burst as I approached Rabuor and a fire engulfed the lorry and everything that was reduced to ashes. I was able to escape at the sound of the tyre burst,” Liamuya said.

Kisumu OCPD Musa Kongoli said there’s more than meets the eye in the incident, adding that the driver reported the incident on Monday evening while the actual incident took place at around 11.50 am.

“We have opened investigations that will lead to the exact cause of the tyre burst because the lorry owner has also lodged complaints on his missing lorry,” said Kongoli.

He added that the victim will not be treated as a suspect yet.

“There are cases where people come reporting incidences that are stage managed and expect the police to hurriedly rush into decisions by accepting their reports. We are, however, not saying that this is one of the cases,” said the police boss.
