Mombasa - Police officers from the Flying Squad Unit on Wednesday shot dead three notorious criminals in a botched robbery at a Changamwe petrol station in Mombasa county.
The armed robbers whom the police have been tracing for months were killed after they stopped at a petrol station with intent to rob.
Police managed to recover two AK47 rifles, 62 rounds ammunition and three magazines wrapped in a shirt and pair of trousers inside the car they were in.
Police however said they were acting on a tip that helped to trace them.
“They pretended to be pushing their car into the petrol station so that it would seem like it had run out of fuel, but our officer accosted them before they could steal and killed them,” said Sevelino Kubai, the Mombasa County deputy police commander.
“They arrived here in a car and asked me to put petrol worth KES 500 in their car. As I started to pump the fuel, they suddenly told me to move aside if I valued my life but thank God police came to my rescue,” a female pump attendant said.
According to an eyewitness, the three were in a gang that has been terrorizing residents of Mombasa.
Mombasa county security chiefs had said the three could be behind the killing of two tourists who were shot dead in Mombasa under mysterious circumstances.
