Police gun down suspected carjacker in Nakuru

Nakuru - Police have gunned down one suspected highway robber and recovered a homemade gun and several rounds of ammunition as he attempted to carjack a Menengai Oil refineries lorry near Kibunja along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
The killed thug, Stephen Mwati Wambogo was in the company of two other thugs who escaped with injuries armed with homemade guns.
A senior police officer in the area who requested anonymity due to security reasons said the driver who was transporting oil from Eldoret to Nakuru had stopped along the highway when the thugs who were hiding in a thick forest attacked him.
“The armed thugs approached the driver, dragged them into the thick forest, beat him up and ordered him to give them with money threatening to shoot him,” said the officer.
Members of the public who saw the driver being dragged away informed AP officers who were on patrol about the incident, rushing to the scene to rescue him.

An exchange of fire ensued, killing one of them on the spot while two others sustained injuries before escaping into the thick Koibatek forest.
“There was fire exchange after the thugs failed to surrender despite being persuaded by the officers. One of them was killed on the spot while two others escaped with major injuries,” he stated.
The deceased to Molo Sub County hospital mortuary.
A manhunt has also been launched to arrest the two thugs who are still at large.
According to the source, the robbers are part of a cropping highway robbery gang that intent to indulge in criminal activities.
“It is worrying new gangs are coming up to indulge into criminal activities by use of guns and crude weapons that police officers will not tolerate,” added the officer.
