Nyeri - Business at Nyeri Law Courts on Monday came to a standstill after prison warders fired several shots in the air in an attempt to stop an 18-year-old suspect from escaping justice.
Most people who had attended their case hearings had to scamper for their safety as gunshot from prison warders rented the air, disrupting business at the court.
According to an eyewitness, James Mbugu Kiama, a remandee at King’ong’o maximum prison had just appeared before resident magistrate Catherine Mburu to answer to theft charges.
Kiama is facing charges of stealing his father’s motor vehicle spare parts valued at KES 7 800, a crime he allegedly committed on August 5, 2014 at Babito village in Mweiga Nyeri County.

He had been remanded after failing to raise cash bail of KES 20 000 or KES 50 000 bond.
"He had just left the court room and was being escorted to the waiting prison lorry when the handcuffed suspect started running towards Kamakwa shopping Centre,” said the eyewitness.
"The officers started to shoot in the air to stop him. I heard more than four shots,” Wachira Kimani, a boda boda operator said.
Confirming the incident, Chief Inspector Isaac Murungi from Kingo'ng’o prison said police managed to rearrest the suspect who is now in their custody.
