Police fail to arrest rape suspect

25 April 2013, 12:24 James Kabotia

Following the defilement of a nine-year-old girl last week, residents of Kimugandura village in Laikipia East Sub County are now pointing a blaming finger at the police for failing to lock up the rape suspect.

On Wednesday last week, the 25 year old man abducted the girl and took her to Umande village which is few kilometres away.

It is also alleged that the casual labourer defiled the minor for three consecutive days.

The girl who is an orphan managed to escape to her uncle's house, where she lives.

According to Ole Tipipi who is a village elder, an angry mob nabbed the suspect and frogmarched him to Naibor Anti stock theft unit camp where he was locked up.

Tipipi said that the uncle was summoned the following day at the camp where the two parties were urged to reconcile.

“We do not understand why the suspect was released without being taken to a police station," he said.

They allege that efforts to have the suspected arrested and locked up in a police cell bore no fruits.

“We tried to have him arrested by police officers from Nanyuki police station where we had reported the matter to but they turned us down, referring us to Dol Dol police station,” they lamented.

The village chairman Saituku Kaparo said they suspect the police officers might have received a huge sum of money so as to sweep the matter under the carpet.

Kaparo questioned why they were referred to Dol Dol police station which he says is far away, in another district.

Medical reports from the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral hospital indicate that the minor was indeed defiled.

While contacted, Laikipia East police boss Joshua Lutukai maintained that he had not been informed about the issue and urged the complainant to table the case to his office so that he can take action.
