Kieni - An Administration Police camp in Embaringo village in Kieni West district was razed down by fire on Tuesday night.
The inferno destroyed two G3 rifles, two handcuffs, 40 rounds of ammunition and police uniforms.
According to area assistant chief Lydia Gathigia Muriuki, the fire started at around 8.00PM and is believed to have been caused by a tin lamp which was placed near the bed by one of the AP officers.
The fire razed the entire camp and extended due to explosion of ammunitions.
“We lost a lot of personal information and data including national identity cards, death and birth certificates which were inside the building,’’ said the assistant chief.
However, inspector Christopher Kinyua in charge of Gatarakwa Division Administration Police unit confirmed that the ammunitions were in a safe amour at the camp.
“We reacted quickly to contain the fire before it consumed the whole building but our efforts were futile, due to shortage of water as the taps ran dry. There were also two gas cylinders in the house which could have fuelled the fire,” Kinyua said.
Area MP James Mathenge (Kanini Kega) who toured the scene requested the county government to establish a disaster management committee to contain the increased fire incidents in Nyeri County.
Mathenge donated KES 100 000 from the CDF kitty to assist the officers who lost their personal belongings saying that they will raise funds to help put up permanent buildings for the officers who are now living in tents.
