Police ban all political rallies indefinitely

27 May 2014, 17:22 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - The police have banned all political rallies with immediate effect.

The move, announced by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo was stated due to the ongoing security situation in the country.

He added in a statement read by spokesman Masoud Mwinyi, that the government had no choice but to go on with the move in light of the upcoming rallies set to be held by both the Cord and Jubilee Coalition.

" I have cancelled all political parties rallies until further notice due to security reasons, he said.

" Cancellation of all political rallies also applies to processions & demonstrations, as criminals may take advantage of these gatherings, he added.

He insisted that there had been prior consultation over the move to ban rallies and asked Kenyans to follow the directive.

Kenyans though, felt that the move was too reactionary and urged the government to get it's agenda straight on security.

" CORD terms Kimaiyo's ban on rallies 'cowardly' and vows to press on with rally to welcome it's leader Raila Odinga back home from the US, politician Gitobu Imanyara said on his Twitter handle.

" The move is just aimed to frustrate CORD's planned rally. No mention of other similar gatherings in the city and country,@Mzeiko188 said.

Security analyst Oscar Chesule did not argue with Kimaiyo's directive but rather with the manner in which it was handled.

" I think the timing is all wrong. There have been issues with security for a while now. Why didn't the police ban the rallies prior to this Raila one? And what about other parties in the country? It comes out in bad taste, he posed.
