Police arrest 8 suspects over Likoni attack

21 July 2014, 14:09 William Korir

Nairobi - Police have arrested eight suspects believed to have been privy to the Likoni attacks that left three people dead and left numerous others injured.

The attacks which were held Sunday night saw unidentified gunmen open fire on civilians indiscriminately, killing the three.

Mombasa Police Commander Philip Kitur confirmed that they had indeed arrested the eight and that a manhunt was ongoing for others.

" We have arrested eight people who we believe know the details of what happened last night and we have taken them in for questioning, he said.

He also insisted that the motives for the attack were yet to be known, even though leaflets dropped in the area after the attacks seemed to point to tribal motives.

" There is yet to be a link between the attacks and the leaflets but we are following it up, he added.

The leaflets distributed in Likoni, warning CORD leader Raila Odinga and his Luo community, could further escalate an already tense political atmosphere in the country and at the Coast.

"This is a revenge for our brothers who were killed in Mpeketoni and you Luos, you wont stay in peace, and you Raila if you have anything to do, just do, we are not fearing you at all, the leaflets read.

The killings will no doubt dent the dwindling public confidence in the country's security agencies which are increasingly getting caught out by such situations.

Kitur though, has appealed for calm.

" I urge Kenyans to remain calm, he added.
