Police Fire At Teachers
05 September 2012, 11:21
Police in Imenti North District yesterday fired live bullets to stray hundreds of striking teachers who were marching at Meru Technical Institute to flash Head teachers from the college.
The teachers, who held a peaceful demonstration at Mwendantu grounds within Meru town before marching to the institution, claimed that some of the school heads were intimidating them by not joining the strike that kicked off yesterday.
Led by the KNUT Meru Branch Executive secretary Caxton Miungi the more than 1000 teachers however were forced to run for their safety as the police fired on air to disperse the demonstrating teachers.
Later their effort to flash the Head teachers who were undertaking their Diploma course examinations were futile after the tight security that was led by the area OCPD Tom Odero was deployed to man them for several hours.
Transport along the Meru- Nanyuki Highway was paralyzed during the melee but nobody was injured.
However the OCPD said he will investigate the incident and the officer who fired on the striking teachers.
Learning was paralyzed in all public schools in Meru County as parents failed to take their children to school.
