Kilifi - A 30-year-old man was Monday arrested in possession of a G3 rifle and 41 rounds of ammunition at Sabaki police check point in Malindi.
Kilifi police boss, Richard Rotich said the accused had hidden the rifle inside a suitcase he was travelling with. The man is said to have been traveling from Garissa to Mombasa.
Rotich said police have launched investigations into the matter.
“We have our officers on ground and will ensure that such individuals are arrested before they can do any harm to members of the public,” said Rotich.
He said that insecurity cases are on the rise in coastal region as weapons are being transported in public service vehicles.
“It’s upon our security teams to ensure that all passengers travelling across the region are carefully screened to ensure that they are not bringing weapons that may harm people,” said Rotich.
Police have also told members of the public and passengers not to panic but be on high alert at all times and provide the police with information on any suspicious characters in the area to help curb the levels of insecurity in the area.
