Parliament adjourned as MPs exchange blows over Security Bill

18 December 2014, 12:39 William Korir

Nairobi - A fist fight erupted in parliament as the security bill debate descended into chaos with the opposition and government side haggling over changes to the country's security make-up.

The chaos that erupted forced speaker Justin Muturi to adjourn the house until 2.30 PM local time, after a similar adjournment failed to calm the house down.

After the house resumed at 11.35 AM, Muturi tried to read the riot act to MPs who were misbehaving but his words hit a dead end as MPs, pumped up by the ongoing debate, descended on each other which blows and kicks.

The chaos was so bad that Senators Moses Wetangula and Johnstone Muthama of CORD's clothes were shredded to pieces.

Muthama's trouser was torn as was Wetangula's shirt in the ensuing madness.

It is understood that the Senators were roughed up by parliamentary staffers who were enforcing an earlier order by Speaker Justin Muturi to have the CORD leaders kicked out of the house for undermining his authority.

Jubilee MPs then apparently joined in the chaos as the house was eventually adjourned.

In a tweet, Deputy President William Ruto urged patience over the Bill and called on leaders to sit down and debate fully and ensure acceptance before the bill is passed.

" The bill must be accepted by both sides. It is for the betterment of Kenyans and to ensure that we are all secure, he said of the chaos in parliament.

It is yet to be known what will happen at 2.30, with rumours circulating that the house might be adjourned for Christmas recess to allow both sides sit through proposed amendments.
