Parents urged to invest in education

28 June 2012, 16:42 Oduor Omondi

Parents have been asked to invest steadily in the education of their children as this remains the pathway to their future success in life.

Nyakach District Education Officer DEO, Cyrus Juma said local stakeholders including parents should consistently channel more resources towards improving facilities in learning institutions if they hope to realize better academic results.

Juma described education as the fundamental pillar that helps create, establish and sustain better standards of living of a country’s citizenry.

He disclosed that Nyakach which was hived off from Nyando District has steadily registered good results but still has room to improve even further.

‘We usually register about 3,400 candidates annually for the national examinations, with the girl child education having picked up tremendously over the past few years, this has paved way for a fair competition and a positive step towards attaining gender equity’, Juma explained.

However, the DEO mentioned challenges and setbacks they have had to deal with in the region’s education sector as under staffing and poor infrastructure that render many institutions inaccessible especially during flood seasons.

Juma commended area MP, Pollyns Ochieng Daima for having prioritized education projects during his tenure, but quickly added that poverty, child labor and the ever rising high number of orphans should also be considered.
