Three people were charged at a Nanyuki Court for marrying off a 14-year-old girl have been remanded in custody after failing to raise Kshs 50,000 bond each.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Kiptoo were the two parents of the underage girl and the mother of the alleged husband.
Nguyuni Lentali, his wife Selia Lentali and the mother to the girl’s husband Alice Sadi denied the charges of intentionally failing to protect the child from a harmful cultural rite.
The charge stated that on August 9 at Jua Kali village in Laikipia East Sub County, the three married off the 14-year-old girl, an act which negatively affected her welfare and psychological development.
The court was told that the girl who was in class seven at Lailagwan Primary School in Laikipia East was married off at a secret ceremony at her home in Rugutu Sub-location which is about 20 kilometres from Nanyuki town.
The court further heard that her alleged husband escaped arrest by police officers but his mother was nabbed.
The girl was been rescued from a home in Ngarendare village in Laikipia North Sub County more than 50 kilometres away.
Last week, the court had issued warrants of arrest for the girl’s parents and the man who had married her.
The court had also instructed the police to have the girl undergo a medical examination and present a report.
Kiptoo released the accused persons on a KES 50 000 bond each with a surerity of similar amount and when they failed to raise the bond, they were remanded in custody.
The girl was taken to Nanyuki Children’s Home After the court reversed its earlier decision to have her remanded at the local police station before the hearing which was set for September 23.
