Matatu drivers in Nakuru county have decried over continued harassment by traffic police saying it had become more difficult for them to do business in most of the routes in the area.
The angry Matatu drivers said that most of the traffic police officers were busy extorting money from them ever since they embarked on removing unworthy vehicles from the roads.
Speaking to the media on Thursday morning, the chairman of the matatu association Steven Muli said that most of the matatu owners were incurring a lot of losses because of the traffic police.
“Many of these police road blocks are nothing but strategies to extort money from the matatus in Nakuru county,” lamented Muli.
The chairman regretted that some traffic police officers were busy collecting bribes despite the ongoing police reforms in the country.
The Matatu drivers further said other traffic police officers were threatening to arrest both the drivers and conductors if they failed to give them handouts.
Nakuru - Eldoret highway and Nairobi - Nakuru highway were named as among the most affected routes.
