Over 80% married couples don't know their HIV status

Nakuru - It has been revealed that over 80% married couples in Nakuru County do not know their HIV status and have never undergone voluntary HIV testing.
Nakuru County health executive, Daniel Mungai, said that only a paltry 20% of the adult population is aware of their HIV status.
Speaking at his office Wednesday, Mungai said that of the 20% are mostly young people aged between 18 and 30.
He said that most couples in the County have never visited a VCT center, something he said has contributed to the rapid spread of HIV/AIDs among married couples in the County.

“Majority of married couples in the County are not keen on knowing their status because they have a perception that they are negative. There is quite a good number of married couples living with the virus but they have not come out openly to say it and this makes the fight against the disease hard. The people visiting VCTs are mostly young people who have started dating or getting into marriage as opposed to the older generation,” he said.
Mungai said the County government has decided to launch a village-to-village voluntary testing drive where mobile VCTs will be used to test as many people as possible in the next three months.
