Nyeri - Over 70 families at the sprawling Witeremere slums in Nyeri town have been rendered homeless after a fierce fire gutted their rental houses Tuesday evening.
The fierce fire reduced 70 rental timber houses to ashes during the 6.30pm incident with the families affected sleeping in the cold.
Properties worth thousands of shillings were lost during the incident.

Area police boss, Adiel Nyange, said combined efforts of Nyeri town and Karatina fire fighters, police and members of the public helped to put off fire after three hours.
Nyange said it was impossible for fire fighters to contain the fire since there are no roads within the slums.
"The area is inaccessible due to congestion of houses," he pointed.
The cause of the fire was not immediately established, and nobody was injured during the incident.
