Over 500 illegal fishing nets destroyed in Migori

27 November 2013, 13:02 Oduor Omondi

Migori - Fisheries officers in Migori County have destroyed illegal fishing nets in Got Kochola and Sori beaches in Lake Victoria.

The officers led by Migori County Principal fisheries, Officer Tom Ojuok, burnt down over 500 illegal fishing nets that were being used to harvest all sorts of fish from small to large and even their eggs thus leading to fish depletion.

Ojuok said the required nets for catching large fish should be 5 inches and the ones for small fish 10mm which again should be used at specific fishing sites in order to have sustainable fishing.

He urged the fishermen to work with the Beach Management Units (BMU) leaders to ensure legal fishing in the area, warning that any fisherman found engaging in illegal activities will be arrested and prosecuted.

However, the fishermen accused BMU leaders of corruption, saying they have been receiving bribes from those using the unauthorised nets.

“Some people using the wrong nets also fake the amount of fish they have caught so as to evade tax,” added Eric Ouma, a fisherman at Sori beach.

The fishermen also called on the government to allow them choose new BMU leaders.

During the destruction of the illegal nets, a Court Officer, Aggrey Oure, was in attendance as per the rule to preside over the exercise.
