Over 2 million circumcised in the last one year

08 May 2015, 13:52 Godfrey Olukya

Kampala - Over 2 million Ugandan men have been circumcised in the last one year as one of the strategies of reducing HIV/AIDs spread in the country.

According to the medical officer in charge of the exercise, Dr Barbra Nanteza, 2.1 million males have been circumcised in government health facilities.

She however said that they wanted more men to go for the exercise.

Uganda has a population of 34 million people with 49 percent being male.

She said, ''The government and its partners are calling for more males to come out for the service to support their health.''

In an interview after an extensive presentation before policy makers and development partners on the current status of the programme in the country, Dr Nanteza said they are targeting 1.1 million males this year.

She said, ''We still need to circumcise more men. We have been circumcising those above 10 years but will soon include those below two years.''

She added that they plan to start circumcising kids under two months this year, using a new programme referred to as glamcal clump.

She also noted that older males have not fully embraced the service due to the painful injection, and their spouses thinking that they will resort to engaging in extra marital affairs.

She urged people above 7 years to go for tetanus immunization to avert death resulting from the infection, saying that over 1 000 people died of tetanus last year.
