Over 150 000 people face hunger as drought bites

11 September 2014, 10:53 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - More than 150 000 people living in Kieni constituency, Nyeri County, are facing hunger due to prolonged drought that has hit the area.

The situation has made water dams and rivers to dry up, endangering the lives of animals especially in Kieni East sub-county.

Laikipia County has also not been spared of hunger as the situation has been deteriorating by day.

Kieni East sub-County deputy commissioner, Daniel Odambu said the national government has however released relief food to residents to mitigate the situation as drought continues to bite.

Area MP, Kanini Kega, distributed the relief foods to the suffering families noting that children and the elderly are the most affected.

He distributed 500 bags of maize, 250 of beans, 100 dozens of maize flour and 100 cartoons of cooking oil.

The program was largely targeting the disabled and those living in settlement schemes.

While distributing the food to Narumoru residents, Kega said the dry spell has prolonged to about four months now.

Other than lack of rain in the area, the MP also attributed the drought to human wildlife conflicts.

The MP also asked the government to put up electric fences to contain animals that usually stray from forests and private ranches to destroy farm crops in the area.

It had been proposed that six mega dams, 20 water pumps and 35 boreholes be constructed in the area as a way of increasing water access and promote agriculture.

Kega however pleaded with the National Youth Service (NYS) to volunteer in construction of the dams which he said would be complete in three years.

“The land in Kieni, though a semi-arid area, is fertile and potential of high agricultural produce. Once the dams are complete my people will eventually venture into agriculture,” said the MP.

Kega added that he will distribute subsidized seedlings to residents.
