Othaya cell escapees still on the run

Police in Othaya are still pursuing four hard core criminals who escaped from the cells of Othaya Police Station on Tuesday night.
Acting area Police boss George Ouko said the police are yet to re-arrest any of them.
“It was unfortunate that one of those who escaped is a notorious and most wanted criminal who had been terrorising residents of Mukurwe-ini and Othaya in Nyeri county,” Ouko said.
He said they have launched a manhunt for the criminals. The four convicts are suspected to have escaped on Tuesday night after they cut off the grills of their cell's roof.
It is not clear how they were in possession of a saw, which they used to cut their way to freedom, but police are interrogating two of their colleagues who were on duty the material night.
He said the officers only learnt about the escape late, following a headcount conducted on Wednesday afternoon.
Ouko said there is need to boost security in the 24-hour manned station.
It also emerged that a month ago, two criminals escaped from the same cell but some police officers tried to cover up the matter. The criminals are yet to be re-arrested.
