Orphans & Vulnerable Children Fund misused

Beneficiaries of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Fund in Imenti North district of the Meru County have complained the money issued by the Government to assist them was being spent for other purposes.
Imenti North District Children’s officer Benjamin Kinyua made the remarks on Thursday while addressing the Area Advisory Committee meeting at the District Commissioner’s boardroom in Meru.
He said some guardians of the beneficiaries were using the money to purchase clothes for themselves and other assorted items instead of assisting the vulnerable children.
He said Imenti North and Imenti Central districts will receive 25 million shillings for the months of February and March this year adding that each family is set to receive ES 2 500 each to assist with the monthly upkeep of the vulnerable children.
The Children’s officer noted that following the complaints, a beneficiary welfare committee had been set up to monitor the use of funds by the caregivers.
He said the funds were issued by the government through the caregivers with the intention of assisting them but this has not been so in most cases.
The meeting was chaired by the Imenti North District officer 1 David Rithaa.
