One dead as cholera outbreak is reported in Mombasa

Mombasa - One person has been confirmed dead while 11 others are receiving treatment in various hospitals within Mombasa following a cholera outbreak in the County.

County health executive, Binti Omar confirmed the death saying they are taking measures to ensure that the outbreak is contained.

She said that an emergency isolation treatment unit at the Coast Provincial General Hospital has been set aside.

“We ... have already contained the situation and teams of experts are out there,” said Binti.

She noted that the Coast Provincial General Hospital has so far received six patients, Potrieze hospital one patient and Mrima hospital four patients making a total of 11 patients.

Dr. Anthony Mogaka reiterated that the hospital is well prepared to handle the cholera cases as they trickle in. He said that so far they have been able to release one patient while the others are still undergoing treatment.

“Our officers are well prepared to handle the situation. One patient has been released after undergoing treatment,” said Mogaka.

Binti said that they already have health officers on the ground inspecting kiosks and open air food vendors.

"We have already issued notices to the kiosks to maintain high standards of hygiene or face closure," she added.

She said that chlorination and spraying of garbage sites is being done across the County as one of the ways of ensuring that the outbreak is contained.

Residents of Mombasa County have been urged to maintain high standards of hygiene in handling food and drinking waterin order to help curb the spread of cholera.
