Ole Kaparo calls for disarmament of pastoralists

Nairobi - National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chairman, Francis Ole Kaparo has described the illegal arms among pastoral communities in Laikipia and Isiolo counties as an impediment to peace and called for disarmament rather than registration of the firearms.
Kaparo said disarmament is the only lasting solution to cattle rustling and killings being perpetrated by pastoralists.
“Guns registration is like arming the whole citizenry and converting the affected areas into battleground which certainly is not the aim of the government,” said NCIC chairman.
Speaking in Lewa Downs Conservancy where he had met with political leaders of the two counties, Kaparo said he was confident that the peace meetings will be fruitful as he expected the attendants to be good ambassadors of the people.

“We have brought political leaders and local opinion leaders to find out the underlying cause of conflicts. I believe they will deliver what we have deliberated to the other members of the communities back at home,” said the former Speaker of the National Assembly.
He said those who are involved in cattle rustling and killing of innocent people are breaking the law and once apprehended they will be prosecuted, adding that the law has to be followed since cattle rustling is a criminal offence.
He further condemned bandits involved in destruction of parks and game reserves by killing wildlife and warned them that government will not sit back and watch as public resources continue to be destroyed.
