ODM eyes separate General Elections

Nairobi - The Orange Democratic Movement ODM is seeking to have the General Elections split into two sections.
The party is seeking to push legislation which will see the elections grouped into two, the national elections going first and then county polls to follow.
The legislation is being sought by ODM to reduce workload for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision IEBC over the duration of the general election.
The law by ODM seeks to have Presidential, National Assembly members and County Woman Representatives initially elected together.
Governors, Senators and County Assembly members will then be chosen 60 days later.
ODM elections head Suna East MP Junet Mohammed said that the proposals will be presented before the house once ODM parliamentarians can meet and agree on what to or not to include in it.
" It is obvious that the election period is tough for the IEBC and they need help, so this proposal will reduce the workload as well as scrutiny on the body," he told News24 on phone Thursday.
" The proposal is friendly to all parties so I am confident that it will pull through," he added.
Observers believe that the new legislation will likely hep reduce electoral malpractices and in the end non-ending court cases on the same.
The IEBC in several electoral suites has admitted that holding the several elections at the same time and having the results in a timely manner as well as with no mistakes is tough.
Nigeria has a similar approach to elections, with the presidential polls done on different days to gubernatorial and constituency elections.
