Nyong'o hands over Health Ministry

22 May 2013, 13:03 Samuel Kisika

Nairobi - Former Medical Services minister, Prof. Anyang Nyong'o on Wednesday handed the Ministry's docket the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary , James Macharia.

Addressing a press briefing in Nairobi, the Kisumu Senator said since his appointment to the ministry in April 2008, he ensured that all citizens received quality, affordable and accessible healthcare despite dismal government funding.

"Though the ministry continued to grapple with inadequate funds and human resources, it has contributed to tremendous achievements in health sector, we initiated an ambitious programme of reform agenda to ensure public hospitals provide required services," he said.

The former minister said that the ministry has made major improvements in physical health infrastructure rehabilitation and improvement, strengthening human resources, procurement and management of commodities and specialized equipment, strengthening the use of technology,public-private partnership and formulation of health policy, strategic plans, legal and hospital governance frameworks.

Despite the achievements, Nyong'o said,"Our efforts are now geared towards further improvement of our health systems so that we can be able to effectively address not only communicable diseases but also emerging health challenges, including non-communicable diseases."

He cautioned that unless the government adequately funds the ministry, his successor would also experience the same finance problem in carrying out his duties.

On his part, Macharia said that the ministry will ensure provision of health insurance services to all, negotiate with relevant sector's donors for funding and ensure that reliable health policies are initiated for equal provision services to the public.

"Health issue are matters of life and death, it has to be taken seriously," said Macharia.
