Nyeri teachers support national wide strike

27 August 2012, 11:13 Joseph Mukubwa

OVER 6,000 teachers from Nyeri County have vowed to back the September 3rd national wide strike.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nyeri County branch said they will join others in the ‘mother of all strike’ during the opening of next term.

Speaking at a press conference, the KNUT chairman Patrick Karinga advised parents not to send their children back to school as there will be no learning.

He called upon all teachers in the county not to open the school on 3rd September.

“We are calling upon our teachers to get ready for this mother of all strike, let them not listen to any threat or intimidation from an quarter for it is their constitutional right to be well remunerated like other Kenyans,” said the chairman.

The branch Executive Secretary Mutahi Kahiga who is in Israel said he is in total support of the strike and that parents should hold government accountable for the failure of teachers to teach next term.

“The teachers of Kenya have been treated worse than slaves or even beasts of burden. No government worthy its name would fail to honour a legal agreement that was legalized by a minister of the same government. I am lobbying the teachers of Israel to be in solidarity with us,” he added.

The branch chairman who was accompanied by Treasurer James Kanyugo among other officials told off the Minister for Finance Njeru Githae for his arrogance since he is not handling the issue well.

“We remind the minister that teachers are not ready to eat rats as he infamously recommended in the past,” the teachers added.

The teachers added that they are perturbed by the manner and casual way for Education Minster Mutula Kilonzo in the manner he is handling the teacher’s issues.

“We are reminded of the energy and effort wasted by the minister in tackling petty issues such as the mini skirt and tuition which can be handled by the junior officers in the ministry,” added Karinga.

The teachers have maintained that the Legal notice 534 of year1997 awarded teachers 50 per cent of their basic salary as house allowance, responsibility allowance at 50 per cent and for head teachers 40 per cent for both deputies and Head of Departments.

They were also awarded the increment of salary at 300 per cent.
