Nyeri step mother arrested for mistreating step children

25 June 2012, 16:18Joseph Mukubwa

Police in Nyeri County have arrested a step mother who has allegedly been mistreating her two step children.

The police with Skuta villagers stormed the home of the mother who is said to have been abusing her step daughters by regularly beating them and denying them food.

The children who include a 12-year-old daughter who is a Standard five pupil at Nyamachaki Primary School and a six year- old nursery school pupil said they are normally beaten daily and despite intervention by neigbours, she has been mistreating and abusing them.

The police pounced on the woman who was heading to her single roomed rental house at Skuta area which is at the outskirts of Nyeri town.

Neigbhours said that the old child has been given the domestic chores and sleeps late at night instead of the woman doing the study work.

“She gives her two children food but leaves us behind. We bath using cold water even when it is raining. We want to be kept away from this mother. Most of the times we sleep hungry as she gives her two children food,” said a 12-year-old daughter.

The children were earlier staying in Thika with their grandmother but later transferred to Nyeri.

The children have marks all over their bodies following the regular beatings.

Ruth Wanjiru who is a neighbor said she normally hears the children crying and the woman becomes very harsh when asked about it.

The father of the children was also accused for not protecting the children.

The head teacher of Nyamachaki Primary School Joseph Wanjau said he decided to inform the police after the class teacher noted that the pupil has been performing poorly of late.

He urged police to keep the children away from the woman to avert any future disaster.

The step mother was later arrested by police.
