Nyeri assembly nominates 15 women
16 May 2013, 15:30
The County assembly of Nyeri has nominated 15 women into the Assembly’s chambers, majority of them being from The National Alliance (TNA) Party and Grand National Union (GNU).
Speaker David Mwangi said the move was aimed at ensuring the house meets the gender rule as stipulated in the constitution.
Addressing the media at White Rhino Hotel on Thursday, Mwangi said since there are 30 elected members, all men, it was significant to dedicate the nomination slots to women.
One of those nominated is TNA County coordinator Regina Macharia who was nominated as award for her party loyalty and efforts to build it in the region which was perceived as a GNU stronghold.
Regina came to the political limelight after the formation of the party early last year and has been nominated to represent interests of youths, who are considered as a marginalized group in the society.
The Speaker of the County Assembly however said the committee on budget allocation is ready to vet the executive officers though the Governor has not yet tabled their names.
He disclosed that there are ten executive departments in the County and so the committee expects the Governor to unveil 10 executives.
