Nyeri TNA Majority Leader removed from office

30 July 2014, 18:45 Joseph Njung’eh

Nyeri - The National Alliance (TNA) Majority Leader in Nyeri County Assembly, Anthony Kibuu has was Wednesday hounded out of office by party members under controversial circumstances.

Kibuu’s position was immediately taken over by Wamagana ward representative, Jesse Mwangi Kamuri after elections.

However, the media was initially barred from entering into the assembly by security officers manning the chambers.

Speaking outside the assembly, Jesse said TNA members decided to change leadership of the party because they "want a person who will work closely with the county government and who will not always fight the area governor".

“People want development and services not politics all the time,” said Jesse with his camp of 19 members.

In another rejoinder, the camp led by ousted Kibuu denied reports that the party endorsed Jesse as their new Majority Leader during the elections, maintaining that Kibuu was their Majority Leader in the assembly.

The party’s Nyeri county coordinator, Regina Macharia said the 19 members who had signed removal of Kibuu did so out of intimidation.

She stated that Jesse's supporters had been promised seats in various committees in the assembly once he takes over the new office.

According to a list availed to the media, 20 TNA MCAs had signed in support of Kibuu.

Another letter sent to the Speaker of the county assembly indicated that during the elections, Lucy Wanyitu (nominated MCA) was elected the deputy Majority Leader, Stephen Mwaniki (chief whip) and Anastacia Wanjiru (nominated) was elected the deputy chief whip.

The party has 36 members in the county assembly.

Regina sensed foul play in the election, claiming that it was a plot by Governor Nderitu Gachagua to constitute a county assembly leadership that sings to his tune.

“We know the governor has dished out money in this political unfold and he should stay away from TNA party politics,” Regina asserted.

She disclosed that disciplinary action would be taken against the members in the other camp since the issue has been forwarded to the party headquarters.

“TNA does not recognize Jesse as the Majority Leader in Nyeri county assembly,” said Regina.
