Nyeri - The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nyeri County executive secretary, Edward Mutahi Kahiga, has expressed interests in the national chairman’s position currently held by Wilson Sossion.
He said his candidature has received endorsement and blessings from Nairobi, Malindi and eight central region branches.
Over the last weekend, he travelled to Homa Bay County, Nyanza region, to seek support where he promised not to let teachers down if given the mandate.
“Mudzo Nzili for Secretary General and Mutahi Kahiga for national chairman,” he asserted.
“Among the very urgent issues we must address are the stalled teacher’s promotions, a new collective bargaining agreement and the reinstatement of the NHIF/TSC medical scheme among other issues,” Mutahi added.
After Homa Bay tour where they held an annual general meeting, Mutahi said they declared that the current national chairman Wilson Sossion should retain his position while Mudzo Nzili is confirmed the Secretary General.
He however stressed that if Sossion crosses over to vie for the Secretary General’s seat, he will be in the ring contending for chairmanship.
He said the traditions set by the union’s founding leaders should be observed and respected.
According to Mutahi, the traditions demands the Secretary General’s position be reserved for Coast region, Nairobi or Nyanza while the Chairman’s seat should go to Western, Central or Rift valley.
