Nyeri Governor pledges to construct an airport

Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua has disclosed that he has allocated KES 250 Million to the Agricultural Sector.
Gachagua said the fund is aimed at raising farm incomes as well as expansion of sustainable employment, food security and business opportunities.
Speaking at Kamukunji Stadium during Madaraka Day celebrations, Gachagua said his government is committed to ensure a right foundation is laid for the transformation of the County.
He revealed that he has already set sectoral task forces for the major crops in the region - tea and coffee - with a view of bringing stakeholders together to determine the way forward regarding agriculture, saying the residents’ economic development and welfare depends on it.
“The move is targeting to ensure farmers are no longer primary producers of raw materials but active players in the value addition chains of their farm produce,” he said.
Gachagua said plans are under way to extend the initiative so as to cover other products like milk, horticultural produce, fish and livestock.
The governor further said that he has prioritized improvement of roads network by allocating KES 700 Million saying infrastructure enhances and enables development activities.
In regard to creation of jobs to the youth, Gachagua said his government has begun exploring possibility of acquiring land in Solio area. This is aimed at expanding the County’s revenue base by acquiring adequate land where businessmen, traders can locate industry and other operations.
He also revealed that an international airport will be constructed in Kieni area to link farmers with the market directly.
He recognized Kieni constituency as an agriculturally devoted area saying farmers in that region have demonstrated their commitment in the sector and need to be appreciated.
He however pleaded with locals to participate constructively in making his aspirations a reality as they will be involved in shaping the priorities that shall be worked on in the next few years.
Gachagua concurrently expressed confidence that the Executive Secretaries he appointed recently will perform and work towards implementing his manifesto.
