Nyando schools fail to reopen due to floods

Some schools in Kisumu East District especially those located in Winam and Kadibo divisions will remain closed even as the first term begins due to floods.
Kisumu East Deputy District Education Officer Thomas Odhiambo said three schools in Winam and four in Kadibo divisions have been hit badly by floods hence their opening dates might be delayed by two weeks.
Most schools had their roofs blown off while others had their latrines and gates demolished.
Learning materials such as text books were also swept by the waters.
Odhiambo however called upon head teachers of the affected schools to convene urgent school management committee meetings and evaluate the cost of destruction, take photographs of the damaged sections then write to their respective Constituency Development Fund (CDF) offices for emergency funding in order to rescue the situation.
Amidst all these, most parents seem to have made the necessary preparations for the school re-opening as evidenced by the heavy traffic in bookshops, supermarkets and uniform outlets in the town.
