Nudity debate takes centre stage amidst stripping scourge

18 November 2014, 15:58 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - The debate over whether women should be allowed to dress in whatever way they want has taken centre stage with a protracted war between opposing sides.

The woman was beaten up badly Monday evening in Kayole in what is an increased case of violence against women in the country over apparent poor dressing standards.

Having been taken to the nearby Mama Lucy hospital for treatment after the incident, the lady was suffering from what is perceived to be internal bodily damage and head injuries.

Over 100 people were arrested in the aftermath of the incident at the Muhango stage.

The incident has caused furore on social media, with many calling for the prosecution of those found to be guilty of causing the melee.

The woman was the latest to be stripped in a spate of violence against women in the country, this incident taking place in Nairobi's Eastlands.

After the incident, police conducted a swoop in the area, arresting the 100 persons, most of whom were intoxicated and idle, according to police.

" They were mostly intoxicated and most that we caught are well known idlers, a police officer who did not want to be named told News24.

Deputy Nairobi police boss Moses Ombati said that the swoop in the area would continue until the vice ends.

" It is against the law for any person to strip their fellow Kenyans of clothes and we will arrest those doing so, he said Tuesday of the operation.

Nearly 1,000 people took to the streets of Nairobi Monday to protest against a series of vicious public attacks on women who were stripped naked and assaulted for wearing mini-skirts or other clothing perceived to be immodest

Videos of two attacks in Mombasa and Nairobi, taken on cellphones and circulated widely via Twitter and other social media, show mobs of men surrounding the women, wresting off their clothes and appearing to kick them in their genital area.

One of the march's organisers said she was aware of 10 separate attacks across Kenya. The Nairobi attack, which happened in broad daylight on a busy street last week, sparked outrage in the cosmopolitan capital.

Deputy President William Ruto called the incident barbaric and Inspector General Police David Kimaiyo has appealed to the victim to come forward, local media reported.

Others however, led by prominent blogger Robert Alai look at it a different way. Why should women dress indecently, even if they have a right to?

With the slogan nudity is not my choice, the group has put pressure on those protesting the stripping scourge, saying they should instead focus on telling women to dress better.

" Why should we allow women to dress indecently. I do not deserve to see indecent exposure, one of those for the latter campaign," Dennis Mutai says.

Ida Odinga, wife to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga agrees that women should not be treated badly but also believes that they should dress properly.

" We should advocate for decent dressing in the country for our children, she said.
