Nominated MCA supports County Development Board

06 August 2014, 13:58 Wilshere

Nakuru - A nominated Member of Nakuru County Assembly, Margaret Wanjiku has supported the move to establish County Development Board saying it will help safeguard devolution and ensure transparency.

The nominated MCA said the formation of the board was timely and should be fully supported by the governors.

“I fully support the newly established County Development Board since it will go a long way in helping to safeguard devolution in this country,” she said on Wednesday morning at Nakuru County Assembly chambers.

Wanjiku said senators will in their new roles as chairmen of the Board assert their oversight responsibility and ensure the counties benefit fully from the devolved funds.

At the same time, she criticised the trips being undertaken by members of the County Assembly to foreign countries saying they were not adding any value to the development of the counties.

Wanjiku also hailed the move to put a ceiling to the budget of the counties pointing out that the initiative will keep in check unwarranted expenditures by the counties.

“A lot of taxpayer’s money is being misused and I feel with the establishment of this Board will help regulate the expenditures of county assemblies,” she said.

Wanjiku commended the national government for supporting devolution and argued that the implementation of the system should be enforced by the MCAs and Governors.

She told off those supporting referendum saying there was need for more time to be given to the Constitution to be fully implemented.

The nominated MCA also maintained that the county government has continued to sideline youths in Nakuru County saying that it was high time they accommodated them accommodated into system.

“We are also fighting for the rights of the youths who are still being marginalized by the Executives," she added.
