Nkaissery quiet as 100 feared dead amid slow response in Turkana

05 May 2015, 17:22 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - Police response was slow, over a day into bandit attacks in Turkana, with over 100 people feared dead.

The clashes between Pokot and Turkana communities after members of the Turkana community allegedly attacked a Pokot family and killed 5 people.

The Pokots then immediately retaliated and waylaid their counterparts at Kasarani area where there was a long gunfight which is said to have killed over 100 people.

Kenya Red Cross personnel in the area said that they had counted close to 70 bodies and that they were sure there were more in the area up ahead.

" We have seen over 70 bodies now, Baringo Red Cross coordinator Kipkemboi Morwess told News24 on phone. We are still searching for more in the rough terrain, he added.

There was also the accusation towards the police that they have failed to deal with the issue of gun carrying bandits in the area.

" Police have failed us. There had been tension in the last three weeks and nothing was done. Even now, they are nowhere to be seen, Onamei Lemaiyan, an area resident also told News24.

There was also no response from the Interior Ministry on the attacks, which are common in the area due to dwindling grazing land and resources.

" The Minister will make a statement once he has been well briefed," a source in the ministry that did not want to be named told News24.
