Karatina - An 80-year-old granny was admitted to a Karatina hospital after she was raped by a gang of men on Monday night near Kimachimbi police station in Mathira constituency, Nyeri County.
According to residents of Ngandu village where the woman resides, it was not the first time that the woman was raped
They said the assailants have been occasionally entering into the house of the ailing woman through a hole they had dug at the back of her mud hut.
After the previous hole had been sealed, three other holes were made during attempts to try to gain entry.
The villagers, who watched the woman being escorted to hospital in disbelief, said the incident may be as a result of neglect and abandonment by her relatives.
The shocked and angered villagers said she lives alone and it is like her family do not visit her.
A volunteer community worker in the constituency, Jane Kariuki, said she was called by villagers and upon arriving she found the woman sleeping in her bed, wet and unable to walk.
However, area Chief Simon Muriithi held a meeting where all young men in the village suspected to have been involved in the act were questioned. The woman could unfortunately not identify her assailants.
The granny kept crying in pain. According to Kariuki said she suffers from diabetes and lives alone.
