Industrial Court orders teachers strike called off
14 January 2015, 18:07
Nairobi - The Industrial Court has struck a deal between teachers unions and the government to have the ongoing teachers strike called off.
The ten day long strike has affected the opening dates for schools in the country with both teachers unions and the government failing to budge over protracted calls to raise salaries and allowances for the tutors.
In a ruling Wednesday, the Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT and Kenya Post Primary Teachers Union KUPPET was ordered to call off the strike after an agreement was reached and teachers told to report to schools Monday next week.
The court will actively seek a middle ground between the parties but only while teachers are back in class.
In the agreement, it was also decided that no teacher be victimized by the Teachers Service Commission TSC, which had threatened to have teachers sacked for taking part in the strike.
The unions will present their memorandum to the court on Monday 19 January, with the TSC doing the same Monday 26 January 2015.
