Nakuru - The Nakuru County government will soon start exporting donkey meat to China, the County deputy Governor has said.
Speaking during the International Donkey Day celebrations at Kihoto Grounds in Naivasha, deputy Governor Joseph Rutto said that the County government is in negotiations with the Chinese government to secure a deal of exporting donkey meat to the Asian country.
Rutto said that the first step towards the exportation of donkey meat to China is the establishment of donkey slaughter houses which will be crucial in slaughtering and packaging of the meat.

“In Asian countries, donkey meat is a delicacy and there is a huge market and that is why we want to establish links with the Chinese government so that they can allow us to export donkey meat into their market. The process has already started and that is why you can see we have started setting up donkey slaughter houses in Naivasha,” said Rutto.
“All we want to ensure is that the donkeys are inspected by veterinary officers before being slaughtered and that the meat is handled in very clean and hygienic environments that meet international standards,” he added.
Rutto said that son a delegation from China will be visiting the County to hold talks with the County leadership over the issue.
