Nakuru Municipal workers want salary increment

22 January 2013, 16:56Steve Wambugu

Workers of the dissolved Municipal Council of Nakuru town have gone on strike demanding an implementation of their dues agreements which dates back from last year.

The Municipal workers have vowed not to go back to work until their demands are met by the Ministry of Local Government.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, the Nakuru branch secretary Joel Otiende said the workers of Municipal Council of Nakuru will not be reporting to work until they are paid their increment dues.
Joel said that the Ministry of local government was working with impunity in the implementing of the increment of pay for Council workers.

He said that there was no word up to now that had been communicated to them from the Ministry of local government.

The secretary of the Nakuru branch said that the Municipal Council was generating a lot of money in a day but the Local government Ministry was dragging itself in overseeing the implementation of the pay increase.

Joel noted that it will be difficult for the government to implement the pay rise once the County government comes into office after the March 4th elections.

Joel also regretted that the Minister of local authorities was busy campaigning while hundreds of workers continue to languish in poverty.

The workers further said that they will be holding a peaceful demonstration later in the day until the government gives in to their demands.
