Nairobi mall fights fears of Westgate repeat

25 March 2014, 21:26 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - The Junction Mall in Nairobi has moved to allay fears that it is insecure in the wake of an incident in which four empty boxes of ammunition were recovered in its premises.

Following confirmation by police of the four empty cases at one of the city's most visited mall's, the management has come out in force to persuade Kenyans that all is well.

The four cases were found in the mall's basement Monday night as confirmed by Nairobi County Police Commander Benson Kibue.

" We can confirm that there were indeed cases found and that they have been retreived by police as investigations continue.

" We would like to assure Kenyans that the country and the city is safe and that measures to heighten security have been taken, he added.

That revelation did not do the Mall any justice and shoppers interviewed by News24 chose to stay away or go elsewhere to shop.

And with memories of the Westgate Mall attack not too far off, the management has assured its clients and the public that all is under control.

" The management of the Junction would like to assure members of the public that the most stringent security measures have been put in place as regards security, a statement from the firm read.

" It is important that there is calm and that most importnatly members of the public report any suspicious characters to the authorities, the statement added.

The incident has raised fears that the city is on the verge of witnessing a terror attack, as has been reported by various western diplomacies and agencies.

An incident in Mombasa on Sunday where six people were shot dead in cold blood will also add to the unease in the country as the governmnt grapples with the shifting security situation in the country.
