Nairobi County to set up parks in every constituency

25 February 2014, 08:11 Samuel Kisika

Nairobi - Nairobi County governor Evans Kidero has said that his government will ensure that every constituency in the county has a park for leisure, tourist attraction and centers for selling African ornaments.

Kidero said that the County’s plan to establish such parks would create employment opportunities among the youth through showcasing their talents and as a way of preserving the environment.

Speaking during the launch of rehabilitation programme for Jevanjee Gardens, Kidero stated that his government has set aside USD 400,000 for upgrading the park for Nairobians to benefit from its free services.

He said that the a perimeter wall will be created around the garden and that they will put sufficient lighting and properly man it to ensure there is a 24-hour service delivery to users.

The UN-Habitat Executive Director, Dr Joan Clos lauded the governor for working hand in hand with his organization to combat grabbing of rehabilitation centres by powerful business people noting that such parks are meant to provide free recreation to the public.

Clos said that having skyscraper buildings in the city without any public recreational centre limits Nairobians from proper interaction and lack where to shade from the scorching sun.

Jevanjee Gardens was donated by the Asian, Jevanjee family in 1906 to be a public place for free recreation when various people pay a visit to the city.
