Nairobi - Several vendors were arrested for illegal slaughter of chicken at Burma market in Nairobi.
The Nairobi City County Veterinary department carried out the operation on Thursday, following the outbreak of cholera that has left several people dead in Nairobi’s slum areas.
“The county government has been conducting surveillance and mapping out areas where illegal slaughtering of poultry was being undertaken. The only slaughter houses allowed to slaughter chicken for sale around Jogoo Road and its environs are Kariokor and Maziwa Poultry slaughter houses,” a statement from the county government said.

The county government further warned that anyone found slaughtering chicken in their premises will be arrested. “Anyone with information regarding the illegal slaughtering of poultry please get in touch on 0725 624489 or email@example.com,” the statement added.
Nairobi residents have since been asked to buy meat and poultry products that have been approved and stamped by the county’s health officer to stop the spread of the disease in the city.
