NGOs decry underfunding

06 February 2014, 10:17 Joseph Mukubwa

Nyeri - National council of NGOs has decried underfunding by donors and called for more funding to enable them to roll out more programmes in the country.

The council's chairperson, Kevinnah Loyatum said there are many NGOs which are not funded despite being at the grassroots level where the community mostly needs them.

Speaking at Ibis Hotel in Karatina town after a meeting with the local NGOs Wednesday, the CEO also said there is need for transparency and accountability of money sent to NGOs.

She said that NGOs in the country receive an average of KES 300 billion annually which should raise the welfare of the people of this country if utilized well.

She at the same time said after the new dispensation, there was also need for the NGOs to reform just like other organizations.

“The international non governmental organizations with their donors and the government should build capacity of local NGOs and leave the work of implementation to local NGOs,” the CEO said.

She said most of the local NGOs are not corrupt.

NGO council Central region vice chairperson, Grace Weru who accompanied Loyatum also lamented that the main challenge of NGOs is scarcity of funding for their programmes.

“While our counterparts, the International NGOs have a huge funding at their disposal and which is supposed to be devolved unto us, they hardly roll it to us and in case one is involved; we are only treated as participants for the purpose of their reports,” said Weru.

The vice chairperson lamented that the organizations dealing with human rights campaigns do not build the capacity of the local organizations to understand what these basic rights entail.

The region now wants a body formed to monitor all donor funding in the region.
