NGO: Extend NCIC term

31 May 2012, 15:50 Alloys Musyoka

A non-governmental organization now wants the government to extend the period of National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) until after general election to take control of political temperatures in the country.
The NGO cautioned that with the facts that campaigns have kicked off in the country many politicians will take advantage of the unavailability of the mechanism to track their speeches and spread hate speech ahead of general election.

According to Kenya Community Support Center (KICOSCE) Director Phyllis Muema, if the government will allow campaigns to continue in absence of the commission politicians may polarize the country by use of hate speech.
She said the commission’s time ends in September which to the organization it is not in order considering the political situation in the country ahead of the general election.

“We all know our politicians and we feel that they will take advantage of the absence of the commission and spread hate speech,
And so we feel there is a need for the government to extend time for the commission so that it can continue monitoring our leaders as they carry on their campaigns until after general election,” she asserted.

With the current political temperature across the country, Muema pointed out that it will be risky to work without current National Cohesion and Integration Commission’s’ current commissioners.

She said NCIC is the watch dog to political leaders who behave badly adding that with the level of impunity in the country the commission should not end its term in September.
