NEMA Director in court over bribery case

06 August 2014, 20:24 Chepkwony Robert

Nakuru - The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) Nakuru county Director was yesterday arraigned in a Nakuru court over allegations of corruption.

Wifred Osumo was charged with corruptly soliciting for a benefit of Sh 10 000 from a tenant of a filling station in Nakuru as a protection fee so as not to shut down the club.

The court heard that on July 25 at Gilanis Supermarket along Club road, the accused as a public officer corruptly solicited and received the bribe from George Muragu.

Osumo was also charged with another count of offering a bribe of Sh 500 000 to three officials of the Ethic and Anti Corruption Commission as an inducement so as not to charge him with corruption offence.

The three officers, Charles Samji, Patrick Mbijiwe and Jonathan Learamo were investigating him for the offences which are contrary to the EACC crimes Act.

Osumo pleaded not guilty to the charges before Principal Magistrate Felix Kombo and applied for a bond through his legal representative David Mongeri.

The accused had been earlier released on a police bond of Sh 15 000 after he was arrested.

Mongeri made an application urging the court to grant his client a bond and compelled the state counsel to provide them with all documents and recording pertaining the evidence that led to the charges.

He also asked the court to schedule a close hearing date and a time frame in which the defence should be presented with the evidence failure to which it should be discarded.

Magistrate kombo granted the state counsel a one month period to serve the accused with all the necessary documents.

Osumo was released on a bond of Sh 500 000 or cash bail of Sh 50 000 pending a hearing on October 30
